FIX PENSION POVERTY IN PORT MACQUARIE

The 2016 Census shows that in the electoral division of Cowper, those who were 65 or older constituted 20.3% of the population (compared with a 15.8% average for Australia).

Sadly, the strength in numbers is not supported by social indicators of wellbeing.

Older people in Port Macquarie West rate in the second lowest quintile of the Index of Wellbeing for Older Australians (http://bit.ly/2EK6noj).

No matter where you live in Australia the Age Pension is inadequate and those who rely on it are often just scraping by on the poverty line or worse.

With a high proportion of retirees in the region, Port Macquarie is a priority target for our campaign activity. Our campaign leaders are visiting Port Macquarie to meet with local individuals, politicians and community groups.

KEY PENSION REFORMS

With a Federal Election likely sometime with the next 12 months or so, we are calling for political support for:

  • More money for rent assistance
  • Free dentistry for people receiving the age pension (full or part)
  • Better energy and medical rebates
  • A new internet access supplement
  • An independent Tribunal to set a fair Age Pension.
